Car resets and InSim mods...

Post by Krayy »

Hi y'all,

Going on the discussions about in game resets, it seems to me that a formal policy or agreement needs to be put in place. Both camps have their pros and cons.

Reset is a good tool for less skilled racers, in that it allows you to run the car at it's limit without fear of being completely knocked out of the race. Also handy for those deep gravel traps when you just "get it wrong". OTOH, resets can encourage "loose" driving where racers have little or no fear of consequences. This means more carnage for the group as whole to deal with.

Whichever way you look at it, one thing is certain...someone who uses reset should not be able to win a race as opposed to those who don't. With this in mind, I would propose the following mods be made to the LFS Lapper server (and rest assured, they are very small mods that can be easily done):
  • * Allow car resets, but allocate a 30 sec time penalty or a stop/go for doing so
  • * Allow a maximum of 2 (or 3 depending on length of race), then get spectated or DQ'd
  • * If any points are scored in a race where the racer uses reset, he/she will be dropped 1 place, or a set number of points will be deducted
  • * Let Lapper keep a running total of the number of race resets. That way, the stats will tell who is abusing the system, and maybe allow for some sort of judiciary
Thoughts?

hey man wasnt moan n but now noticeable has had the ablitly to affect my results massively

stop /go gets my thumbs up as would be easyest to see results
and if were damaged after incident but could carry on ..would have you weighting up if it was faster to
carry on damaged to pits to repair or reset and have to pit to stop/ go anyway or if your damage was minor
decide to carry on rather than lose time

abusing this system would see you constantly pitting
which brings me to this

after trying a few stints with the a.i using reset for the FIRST time
i did learn alot more about limits
but in a very messy way..consistincy dropped way off
it started to feel like a G_ _ E
it felt like cheating

tyres were another thing new to me....
thus i guess allowing someone ablity to run sticky rubber counting on the fact of reseting
say if thursday was 20laps no pit id say you would loose 1/2 seconds reseting in the sharp down hill/uphill hairpin
but would gain a fresh car and new sticky soft rubber........
something i actually needed on thursday lol

defanatly not moaning as i feel better finishing where i deserve ... and will learn from it

the real downfall off this system is when its not ur fault ....because depending on the out come
you could be the one having to stop go while they carry on ..

tis unfortunatle lfs taps/bumps physics are some times like a lottery...mixed with even a little lag
makes for some interesting reset causing activity

do other servers on there race events use resets??

As to other series' using resets, it depends on how serious they are. Most of the organised series' that I have had a look at (CTRA, MNR and Grand Prix Legends ones) do not allow resets, but the Thursdays are for a bit of fun or serious racing, depending on what your level or mood is.

That being said, in race 2 I was 8 secs down on Steala and 4aged and they had an off and used reset before continuing. Net result was I beat 4aged to the line by .1 of a second (if that), which if the reset had had a penalty attached, it would have been a greater margin. Now if that had been for 1st place and then 4aged had got the win, I don't think it would have been fair.

Same with going hard and using up your tyres, then a quick reset and you're off again. A stop/go on the back of an unscheduled reset seems to be pretty fair. Or a 30 sec penalty on the last lap.

Personally, I would like to see our Thursdays use a car reset penalty to encourage people to drive within their limits. If there are actual consequences, then I for one would drive to preserve the car rather than trust a reset if I run out of grip or ability.

yea hear what you guys are saying, I dont mind having reset off during our races, I guess when you know its on sometimes you subconiously drive differntly as you know you can reset and your car isnt as precious.

So yea maybe reset off for the next round of Baby FR?

im not sure if lappper can tell how many times a player has used reset, if we could then we could +30 sec to their total race time if they did.

Good points raised here fellers although I dont have alot to say on the matter as I'm a lil off the pace to worry about it and am opting for the who cares attitude lol.
Basically if I can finish a race in reasonably good nik and havnt pissed anyone off then hell its been a cracker of a night regardless of position!

You will need to have this voted on though to have it implimented so get the poll up to move it along.

cool cool
its all about fun and for me this adds to the fun factor
thursday nights are defanatly a big adrenalin rush for me
so reseting doent even factor into it when im sitting upside down

knowing that every one else is using the same system
i would feel that a stop/go or even drive throu???(even possible??)
would be a fair compromise and penalty
i think it would really change the aggresiveness with starts/passing
spice things up in the pits
and really REAL cringing when you mess it up

black wood will be a super interesting track to impliment this restriction
due to its trampoline curbs :) (really like to catch it and try saudi suv 2wheels drivimg )
so if we have a decent grid (like we have been ) id say the pits may be a hive of activity
promoting safer consistant drivers to the front.....
and still providing good battles for thouse pitting on same laps

clutches
didnt try this but if reset fixes clutches then its defanalty a massive advantage
any one using a tripple pedal set knows when there sloppy/to fast changes
occur and personaly i have to work very hard with the minis H pattern 5sp
to keep the clutch temp down (which i love lol but very worried about about my new
simulater clutch .which is full throw and pretty hard)

downfalls are that it may spread the feild out to much
and pressure to keep concentration up 100 percent
which is not always a bad thing but generaly impossible due to gaming enviroments

my vote to try it at black woods and see how it goes
just dont swear at me to much when ur sittng in the pits
will probably next to ya anyway :)

Well lapper in its default state doesnt allow for Car Reset events, but it's easy to add and recompile, and in doing so put an option in the lapper config file to degtermine which typoe of penalty (drive thru/stop-go/30secs) and how many resets cause that penalty.

Only problem is that I dont have access to the server and it's lapper install. Who does and can copy across new files etc? And what base version of lapper is it?
