Well, finished my first ever cockpit at the weekend. I made it from scratch one bit at a time, basicly just by constantly trying it out for size as I went along to make sure it all felt right. This meant I ended up with a cockpit that exactly fits me and is exactly how I wanted it. Pretty simple design, I knew the basics from the start which was that all the joints were going to be triangulated for ultimate rigidity, glued and screwed joints, and I wanted the drivers weight totally suspended on the base to again add mass and make it more sturdy. Bar the $40 seat (well $38 as 2 bucks fell out when I was building it!) the whole thing was free.

The cantilevered laptop mount is temporary as ill be getting dedicated 24" screen, and a more wrap around top element/desk will be fitted. Ill also be painting the pine in gloss black once ive filled the screw holes and knots, and sanded it all totally smooth. The pedal and wheel trays, and the desk top are all a gloss white laminate, so the thing should look pretty cool once done. The second pic ive attached is photoshopped to make the frame black.

It drives brilliantly, I can still slide the seat back and forth on the rails and obviously recline it so the position is perfect, but I tend to like the more upright, wheel close position anyway. The thing is totally rock solid. You could easily stand on the wheel mount its that strong. Pushing the wheel mount to one side lifts the base off the floor before the mount even thinks about moving!

Cheers guys! Oh, seat is from a Prelude for all those car spotters out there and in case anyone else is thinking of making their own playpen. Got the passenger side one as its often less worn than the drivers.

Oh, for anyone interested, I sanded and painted mine, and also tilted the seat base back a little more. Heres a finished pic with the new 24" screen
